The Republic of Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America, covering approximately 130,373 km² with a population of around 6.8 million people. Its capital, Managua, lies beside Lake Xolotlán and serves as the country’s political and economic center.
Nicaragua shares borders with Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south, and boasts coastlines on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, making it a strategic hub for regional trade. The country’s geography is defined by active volcanoes, freshwater lakes, and lush tropical landscapes—most notably Lake Nicaragua, the largest in Central America.
Historically colonized by Spain in the 16th century, Nicaragua gained independence in 1821. Its culture reflects a rich blend of indigenous, African, and Spanish influences, expressed through vibrant festivals, music, and culinary traditions.
The economy is primarily driven by agriculture, livestock, fishing, mining, and tourism, with growing relevance in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors, especially in the context of regional development and international cooperation.
